Alcohol Awareness Month: Supporting Healthy Choices in Finney County


April is Alcohol Awareness Month—a time dedicated to raising awareness, encouraging conversations, and taking action to prevent alcohol misuse in our community. 


Recent data from the Kansas Communities That Care (KCTC) Survey shows that alcohol remains the most commonly used substance among youth in Finney County, with usage rates nearly twice as high as vaping. This highlights how normalized and accessible alcohol continues to be for young people in our community. 


Early alcohol use is associated with increased risks, including academic challenges, mental health concerns, risky behaviors, and a greater likelihood of substance use later in life. However, there is encouraging news—most youth are choosing not to drink, and prevention efforts are making a difference.
