Rural Kansas Women's Healthcare Research - Can You Help?

Jewel Westwood is a Kansas City resident, a practice administrator at a Head & Neck Surgery practice, and a doctoral candidate at Franklin University conducting IRB-approved dissertation research on how women in rural Kansas have successfully navigated healthcare access despite challenges like distance, cost, insurance gaps, and limited providers.

She has been working with the Finney County Health Department on her recruitment efforts and joined us for National Night Out this week to talk individually with potential respondents.

Jewel is looking for women 18+ in rural Kansas who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicaid/CHIP and have found a way to get care in the past two years despite real barriers.  A flyer with all pertinent information is attached in English and Spanish.  Please share this information with women you think might qualify for the research study.

LiveWell Newsletter- August 3, 2026

This week, LiveWell Finney County is celebrating the power of community and healthy families!

We’re excited to participate in National Night Out with the residents of East Garden Village, bringing neighbors, community organizations, and public safety partners together for an evening of connection, fun, and community spirit.

August is also National Breastfeeding Month, and we’re proud to recognize the many local partners working to make Finney County a more breastfeeding-friendly community. Through the Community Breastfeeding Coalition, healthcare providers, WIC, employers, and community organizations are helping ensure families have the support and resources they need to give children the healthiest possible start.

As a reminder, August is National Immunization Awareness Month, making it a great time to ensure children, teens, and adults are up to date on recommended vaccines.

Upcoming Events:

  • August 4: National Night Out

LiveWell Finney County July Newsletter

This month, LiveWell Finney County is celebrating exciting progress across our community. Garden City was selected to receive a Kansas Safe Routes to School Planning Grant, helping create safer opportunities for students to walk, bike, and roll to school. We’re also preparing for Prevention Night at the Pool on July 29, a free community event focused on promoting healthy, substance-free activities for youth and families.

The newsletter also highlights how changing the environments where we live, learn, work, and play can make healthy choices easier for everyone. You’ll find updates on coalition initiatives, upcoming events, and ways to get involved in improving the health, well-being, and safety of Finney County.
